Las Vegas Springs Preserves

Outdoor Jim Wicklund June 27, 2024

There is a true gem for Las Vegas residents or visitors; it is The Spring Preserves. It is located in the heart of Las Vegas, 333 S. Valley View, 89107, and a few miles from Downtown Las Vegas. The Spring Preserves is 180 acres of a cultural institution designed Mojave Desert experience. The Spring Preserves offers an incredible Botanical Garden with special collections and features like Mojave Collection, which features Cactus Alley, Cactus from arid regions of North and South America, including the Mojave, Great Basin, Sonoran, Chihuahuan, central Mexican, and South American deserts. Our signature Mojave Cactus and Succulent Collection is a nationally accredited, comprehensive display of Mojave Desert cactus and succulents.

There is a teaching Garden where students and educators can study how and what can be a garden in the southwest desert.

The Vegetable Garden Serving as a living demonstration of when and how to grow which vegetables in the desert, like tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, bean, and much more, with winter gardening tips of what can grow with colder temperatures.

The Rose Garden, with its centerpiece trellis, the Rose Garden provides a beautiful location for shade, reflection, and photo opportunities. With a diverse display of rose varieties, something is blooming nearly year-round!

The Herb Garden features plants that have been used for centuries by people in cooking, medicine, cosmetics, decoration, and fruit and nut trees. The spring and early summer are the best times to check out the herb collection, including thyme, lavender, oregano, marjoram, bay leaf, and rosemary.

The Enabling Gardening Highlighting gardening techniques that can aid gardeners with physical challenges, the Enabling Garden features vertical planting walls, raised planters, and shallow pans.

Plam Gardening Although no palms are native to the Las Vegas area; our palm garden features nine species that thrive in our conditions, including edible date palms.

Deserts of the World his collection features various species of cacti and succulents from all five of the world’s major deserts, including unique varieties you won’t find anywhere else at the Preserve!

Constructed Wetlands This central feature of the Botanical Garden functions as the on-site wastewater treatment facility. Wastewater from our buildings—including water collected when it rains—flows underground through the wetland, where it is naturally treated and cleansed. The wetland sustains a lush, biologically diverse oasis filled with riparian vegetation native to Clark County.

Wildlife Gardens Located next to the wetland, the Wildlife Garden features numerous pollinator-attractors like Salvia, Penstemon, and Tecoma to attract and feed hummingbirds, while butterfly bush, milkweed, and blanket flower attract butterflies. The night-blooming evening primrose attracts moths in the early morning and late afternoon.

Natural Area and Trails

The Natural Areas at the Springs Preserve can be found along 3.6 miles of trails that meander through 110 acres of native habitats and archaeological sites, all representing the “birthplace of Las Vegas”—the site of the Las Vegas Springs. From the Cienega to the Mesquite Bosque, there’s plenty to see along our trails.

Butterfly Habit

In this seasonal exhibit, wander through our unique Butterfly Habitat and witness the fascinating dance between free-flying butterflies, the plants that sustain them, and their essential role as pollinators in the ecosystem.

You’ll emerge with a better understanding of the environment needed for the survival of these spectacular animals.

Wildlife

The Springs Preserve is a hotspot for native wildlife. In addition to the live animal exhibits, we’re also home to more than 250 species of native wildlife living in natural and restored habitats along our trails and pathways. As you explore the Springs Preserve, you’re likely to spot free-roaming ground squirrels, lizards, insects, and more!

Wetland Bird Habitat

Bird watchers are especially intrigued by the winged friends frequenting the Preserve’s desert wetland, as species as diverse as the Western Screech-Owl, Hooded Oriole, and Green Heron have been spotted. Just head to the Cienega on our trails, and keep your eyes peeled.

Desert Tortoise Habitat

Enjoying the 15-acre trails while spotting desert tortoise throughout, and you might get a glimpse of the great Mojave Max Tortoise.
